Vanuatu policy interest rate
The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu's official policy interest rate — historically called the RBV rediscount rate, and formally renamed the 'RBV Rate' by Board decision on 6 July 2026. Set by the RBV Board of Directors (the ultimate decision-making body) on the recommendation of the Monetary Policy Committee, under the Reserve Bank of Vanuatu Act No. 37 of 2025, whose primary objective is domestic price stability (target range 0–4 percent) with the vatu's exchange-rate peg to a currency basket as the operating anchor. The stance is formally reviewed roughly quarterly, with two full Monetary Policy Statements a year (March and September) and press releases for the intervening decisions.

What this value means
LEVEL AND DATE: 2.75%, in force since 3 September 2024, when the Board raised it from 2.25% to 2.75% (a 50bp TIGHTENING, together with a rise in the Capital Adequacy Ratio from 10% to 12%) to drain excess bank liquidity. It has been held at every decision since: 18 Mar 2025, 14 Oct 2025, 8 Apr 2026 and 6 Jul 2026. NAME CHANGE: as of the 6 Jul 2026 decision the instrument's official name is the 'RBV Rate'; earlier RBV documents call it the 'RBV rediscount/policy interest rate' or 'official interest rate (rediscount rate)'. Watchers keying on the old wording will miss future releases. TRAP — A TYPO IN THE RBV'S OWN DOCUMENT: the September 2024 Monetary Policy Statement states in one passage that the RBV 'raised both the policy rate by 0.5 percentage points to 5.75 percent'. That is an error in the RBV's text: the Governor's foreword in the SAME document says 'raised its policy rate by 0.5 percentage points to 2.75 percent', and the Monetary Policy Stance section itemises 'It increased the RBV policy rate from 2.25 percent to 2.75 percent.' 2.75% is correct; 5.75% has never been the level. OTHER SETTINGS (not this series, and the usual lookalikes): Statutory Reserve Deposit 5.50%, Capital Adequacy Ratio 12.0%, Liquid Asset Ratio 5.0%, and open market operations via RBV Note issuance at VT1.9 billion per issue (frequency cut from four to three issues per month in April 2026). Note the LAR was 10% in the Sept 2025 MPS and 5% by April 2026 — it is a prudential ratio, not the policy rate. FRAMEWORK REFORM IN PROGRESS: the July 2026 release records the Board endorsing 'a new interest rate calibration methodology, the streamlining of RBV Note maturities' and a revised Monetary and Prudential Policy Framework, so the definition of the rate may be restated in coming statements. NEXT REVIEW: September 2026, 'or earlier should economic conditions require'. ACCESS: rbv.gov.vu serves an incomplete TLS certificate chain — standard fetchers fail with 'unable to verify the first certificate'; the content is fine when the chain is not enforced.
