Eleven nationally observed public holidays. Dates are the OBSERVED dates published by MBIE for 2026 and match the transfer rules as applied. SUBSTITUTION RULES APPLIED: (1) Anzac Day's actual date, 25 April 2026, falls on a SATURDAY, so it is Mondayised to Monday 27 April 2026 for employees who would not otherwise work that Saturday (Holidays Act 2003 ss 45-45B). Waitangi Day 6 February 2026 falls on a Friday, so no transfer is needed. (2) Boxing Day's actual date, 26 December 2026, falls on a SATURDAY, so it is observed on Monday 28 December 2026 for employees who would not otherwise work that Saturday; Christmas Day 25 December 2026 falls on a Friday and is observed on the day. New Year's Day (Thursday) and the Day after New Year's Day (Friday) both fall on weekdays in 2026 and need no transfer. (3) IMPORTANT NUANCE: Mondayisation in New Zealand is employee-specific, not universal — an employee who WOULD normally have worked the Saturday takes the holiday on the actual Saturday date instead of the Monday. This list serves the default (Monday-observed) case; payroll systems must apply the individual test. (4) Matariki is a movable feast fixed by statute rather than computed: Friday 10 July 2026 is the date prescribed in the Schedule to Te Kahui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022, which lists a set date for each year 2022-2052. It is never Mondayised because it is always legislated onto a Friday. (5) King's Birthday is the first Monday in June (1 June 2026); Labour Day is the fourth Monday in October (26 October 2026). Easter dates follow the ecclesiastical computus: Good Friday 3 April, Easter Monday 6 April 2026. DELIBERATE EXCLUSIONS: Easter Sunday is NOT a public holiday under the Holidays Act 2003 (it is a restricted trading day only, under the Shop Trading Hours Act 1990). The twelve PROVINCIAL ANNIVERSARY DAYS (Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, Taranaki, Otago, Southland, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Westland, Chatham Islands) are excluded from this national list because each is observed only within its own former-province area, is fixed by local council custom rather than by national statute, and MBIE itself warns that its published provincial dates may contain errors and should be checked with the local council. For reference, the 2026 observed provincial dates published by MBIE are: Wellington 19 Jan, Auckland 26 Jan, Nelson 2 Feb, Taranaki 9 Mar, Otago 23 Mar, Southland 7 Apr (Easter Tuesday), South Canterbury 28 Sep, Hawke's Bay 23 Oct, Marlborough 2 Nov, Canterbury 13 Nov, Westland 30 Nov, Chatham Islands 30 Nov. Also excluded: Anniversary of the death of a Sovereign or other one-off royal/commemorative days, which require ad hoc legislation and none is in force for 2026. 2027 EXTENSION (2026-07-30): observed dates per the Holidays Act 2003 ss.44-45B Mondayisation: Day after New Year's (Sat 2 Jan) -> Mon 4 Jan; Waitangi Day (Sat 6 Feb) -> Mon 8 Feb; Anzac Day (Sun 25 Apr) -> Mon 26 Apr; Christmas (Sat 25 Dec) -> Mon 27 Dec; Boxing Day (Sun 26 Dec) -> Tue 28 Dec. Mondayisation applies only to employees for whom the weekend day is not otherwise a working day - weekend workers observe the actual dates. Matariki = Fri 25 Jun 2027 from the statutory schedule of the Te Kahui o Matariki Public Holiday Act 2022 (set by list, never computed). Regional anniversary days are not included.
